Oboz Sawtooth X Mid combines rugged leather construction, ankle support and waterproof B-DRY protection- perfect on the challenging trails without being uncomfortable.

It is not an easy task to find a hiking boot that has just the right combination of comfort, durability, and support like climbing a mountain with a steep slope has. Most of the hikers purchase shoes that are comfortable in the stores but do not perform well after a few hikes and their feet become sore or give poor traction. This is where the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid comes in as a reputable brand amongst hikers.

Having tried these boots on several trails, I may state that Oboz Sawtooth X Mid will continue to be one of the best hiking boots in 2025. It has much support, rough protection and reliable waterproofing and high quality craftsmanship. This boot should be considered not only by a casual hiker but also a serious backpacker.

Pros & Cons

  • Great ankle and feet support.

First Impressions and Build Quality

Some of the current hiking boots have overly depended on the synthetic materials, as they do not last long and do not provide an adequate protection in harsh environments. It is usually frustrating because hikers who have perfect boots can now tear or lose their shape after a couple of hikes. Oboz Sawtooth X Mid alleviates this problem by providing a construction equally as robust as it is good-looking.

Made of oiled Nubuck leather and strong Cordura mesh, the Sawtooth X Mid is premium-feeling off the rack. Quality craftsmanship has always been uppermost with Oboz and this is evident here, with its accurate stitching, heavy reinforcements, and a construction that was to make thousands of trail miles.

Comfort and Fit

Breaking new hiking boots without painful blisters or tightness is one of the greatest challenges on the way to new hiking boots. First, I had the Sawtooth X Mid slightly fitted, particularly in the forefoot, which is not very comfortable to the hiker with broad feet. The initial few increases were solid underfoot and the break-in was felt.

But then the Adaptive Cushioning Technology on the mid sole started shining after several trails. It shapes itself to the natural movement of your foot providing responsive comfort and excellent shock absorption. After breaking in O Fit insole offers a customized cushioning and support, which keeps the feet stable and comfortable even during long walks.

Weight and Flexibility

It is a common misconception among many hikers that lightweight shoes imply sacrificing of stability and those that are heavier will act as weight on your feet. The Oboz Sawtooth X Mid is a compromise at approximately 20 ounces per shoe and this may seem heavy initially. On more sustained increases, however, that additional weight becomes translated to improved support and control.

Later on when they became familiar to me I liked their balanced structure. The boot has just enough flex to be able to move naturally without being floppy. It has a very impressive degree of stability on rough surfaces, so with a mid-weight boot, you obtain the degree of stability and the flexible aspect in a single and sturdy package.

Traction and Grip

Nothing would be worse than slipping on wet rocks or muddy trails and this is the nightmare of every hiker. A lot of boots claim to have good traction yet they fail when the road becomes wet. Fortunately, the help of the Trail Tread outsole on the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid gives it a good grip in the dry and rocky environment, and the lugs are very wide and offer stability and confidence when walking on them.

Traction on wet surface might be a little better, however, performance is still reliable. I put in on these boots on steep hills and loose gravel and they did not slide at all. The aggressive tread pattern and solid out sole can be used in most hiking situations throughout the year because the Sawtooth X Mid is a great choice.

Waterproofing Performance

Even the loveliest hiking trip can turn out to be a nightmare in wet socks, and at least your shoes could not hold water back. This is solved with the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid with its B-DRY waterproof membrane that is used to shield your feet in the rain, snow and shallow streams crossings. Breathability of waterproof boots is a concern to many hikers – and it is understandable.

The waterproofing performed great even during my testing, even though I did a 10-minute submersion test. It offers protection of up to approximately three inches that is sufficient to cover most wet weather conditions though not deep river crossings. When you have a regular trail moisture or a light rain, however, Sawtooth X mid does not fail.

Protection and Support

Conditions on the trail may be unpredictable at times, one second you are on soft soil, then the following second you are on rough rocks. There are boots that make everything feel any bump in your feet but the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid provides strong support at all the right places. Its strengthened toe cap and hard leather heel is like armor to rough ground.

The security is tactfully made. The heel grips in your foot helps to keep you stationary, and the upper will protect against abrasions. You can be on rocky trails, and in thick forest trails and the Sawtooth x keeps your feet safe, not as stiff or heavy.

Stability and Ankle Support

The problems that occur in uneven trails include ankle rolls and foot fatigue, particularly when the hiker is carrying a heavy pack. Most of the boots do not offer adequate lateral support, which means that steep climbing is dangerous. Happily, Sawtooth X Mid has the best in this department and has excellent ankle stability and a strong but flexible cuff.

I enjoyed the fact that the boot was not too low around the ankle as other mid-height versions. The shock on the rocky surfaces is absorbed by the cushioning and the nylon shank assists in maintaining the balance. All of this is why Sawtooth X will be one of the most durable mid-hiking shoes in 2025.

Comfort and Interior Breathability

Waterproof boots do not have breathability and thus causes the feet to be sweaty and uncomfortable during extended hikes. This may be irritating particularly during hot weather or a trail that is at high speed. The Sawtooth X Mid is able to remain fairly breathable due to its cordura mesh panels that are specifically located around the upper.

Such mesh areas provide minor air circulation without waterproofing. They are also able to regulate temperature when used together with moisture-wicking socks. The inside lining is also smooth and padded and it does not cause irritation and hot spots even after several hours on the trail.

Fit and Sizing

The one thing hikers can moan about is that mid boots do not fit properly, be it around the ankle or too tight over the midfoot. At first, I had a tight squeeze particularly at the top and bottom of my foot. This rendered the first assault rather uncomfortable to my high arches.

The positive aspect of it is that Oboz has wide-fit selections, which resolve the problem of volume among most hikers. The lacing system after being adjusted keeps the foot in place with no heel lift or slipping. To fit the best I would recommend going a half-size up in case you prefer a roomier fit, or have thicker hiking socks.

Quality and Manufacturing

There is no worse disappointment than the expensive hiking boots to disintegrate one season into being useless. Fortunately, Oboz has durability as one of its strengths, and the Sawtooth X Mid does not betray the promise. Its reinforced heel cup with over-stitches of leather makes it a boot to last.

The out sole and mid sole had very little wear after weeks of experimentation with rocky and muddy trails. The leather becomes oiled with time to have a natural patina, but it does not influence performance. In simple terms, these boots are phenomenally good in terms of their durability – a companion of a regular hiker.

Real Trail Experience

One thing is to appreciate boots on paper, but the truth is on the trail. During my strolls across the mixed terrain, such as gravel walks and wet woodland, the Sawtooth X Mid offered me a reliable walk all the way. The cushioning reduced fatigue and the traction remained similar even when descending a steep hill.

WhatsApp Image 2025 10 24 at 9.11.27 PM

The only negative point I could notice was some slight stiffening in the first few miles, but after the break-in, they became very comfortable. When you’re climbing long hikes or weekend backpacking adventures the Sawtooth X Mid will do exactly what you would expect of a high quality hiking boot; it will be stable, secure, and adventure ready.

Final Thoughts

There are various brands that claim to offer the best hiking boots and it would be so easy to get caught up in selecting the appropriate one. Although there are more recent models such as Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX or Keen Targhee IV that are lighter in weight, the Oboz Sawtooth X Mid has become famous due to its stability and durability. It is not the lightest or lightest boot, but it is the one that will serve your feet a long time.

The Sawtooth X Mid is well worth your money as long as you appreciate reliability, ankle support and long-lasting comfort. It is still one of the top waterproof hiking boots in 2025, which proves that the old-fashioned mastership still surpasses most of the current trends.
