The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid Gore-Tex Review: Buyer’s Guide

The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid Gore-Tex covers rugged, waterproof protection with Cordura ripstop, rock-guard sole, and 5 mm lugs for harsh terrain.
It is never easy to get a hiking boot that is more than a mere balance between comfort, durability and weather protection. I have spent several years trying various hiking boots made with Gore-Tex and most of them would either be too stiff or unstable when making long walks. Having learned about The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid Gore-Tex, I was not sure that a synthetic boot could be as good as leather boots that I previously wore. However, my suspicions were soon shattered after spending a few miles hiking through the unpredictable scenery of Patagonia.
Since the initial step, these beast hiking boots demonstrated that there is a new way to get comfortable on the trail, and innovation can make it happen. The wide toe box, balanced cushioning and waterproof construction ensured every hike to be more comfortable and pleasant. The Offtrail Hike LT Mid Gore-Tex is built to be an all-terrain adventure shoe providing superior support without that painful break-in period conventional boots require. It is one of those rare ones that comes out of the box and works well.
Pros & Cons

Comfort and Fit
The fit of the hiking boots, particularly the toe box, is one of the largest problems that I encounter when purchasing the shoes. The evidence of narrow designs is blisters and soreness following prolonged climbs. But The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid solved this issue immediately. During my initial 12 mile hike, there was no pressure point, no rubbing and break in pain and this was a great surprise to a boot as solid as this.
The super wide toe box provided my feet with the room to breathe and the padded collar provided a snug but relaxed fit. With large feet the construction around the heel held me firmly in place. The cutout on the back of the ankle was in a natural stride, which gave the walk a smooth motion. It is evident that The North Face made this boot to be comfort-oriented when it comes to all-day activities whether hiking or backpacking.

Support and Stability
The area where most lightweight hiking boots fail is support, which can compromise stability of the boots. In uneven trails, I would have problems with twisting my ankle and lack of good ground feedback, and so it used to be tiresome having to walk a long distance. Fortunately, The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid transformed it completely. It had a wide platform and a strong out sole that offered it a fantastically balanced ride even when going through the rocky or slippery tracks.
The heel cup was structured providing my foot with a planted sensation and reducing the movement to the sides. I had felt stable in my ankles due to cushioned mid sole and rigid under foot stability even when I was carrying a heavy pack. The Offtrail is also more controlled and protective than lighter models such as the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Mid Leather GTX, so it is ideal on technical hikes with balance as a primary factor.

Built for trail comfort with balanced cushioning and durable waterproof protection.

Sleek design with durable traction and adaptive comfort for long-distance adventures.
Traction and Grip
Wet rock or muddy slope traction cannot be stopped by anything, and it is frustrating and dangerous to fall during a hike. The first thing that I wanted to find out when I hadThe North Face Offtrail Hike LT on the slick trails was how the outsole will perform. The boots sank in the loose ground easily with The North Face Surface Ctrl rubber and lugs of 5mm depth.
They may best be used in mud or snow, or where the way is forested, but they still maintain themselves on the granite and the rocky slopes. The sole is designed to be flexible so that it can be stable on irregular surfaces as well, and provides a confidence feel with each stride. Although it is not as tenacious as a climbing-oriented sole, this all-terrain tread provides a very decent compromise between the grip and the versatility, which makes it appropriate in any form of adventure.

Durability
Artificial hiking shoes have a tendency to wear down more quickly than the leather shoes, yet the North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid is no longer a part of it. I have had more than 50 miles of trail use of these boots in rugged paths, and the materials are almost new. The Cordura ripstop nylon upper with ballistic-rubber reinforcements is tough without being too bulky and nubuck-leather overlays help raise resistance to abrasion at the point of greatest need.

The signs of tearing or separation were not seen even after walking through rugged landscapes and heavy mud. The TPU overlays also increase the durability of the toe and heel. Such design features render the Offtrail a surprisingly rugged synthetic model, which will provide the longevity of the traditional leather hiking boots with being lightweight and flexible.
Foot Protection
A single misstep on the rocky or rough surface might bruise your feet in the event your boots are not well covered. I have had this with most of the minimalist hiking shoes where flexibility was more important than safety. The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid on the other hand is like the feet armour. The rubber top toe cap, firm heel support, and TPU reinforcements are resistant to the shrewd rocks and pieces of debris with ease.

In spite of such strong defense, the boots do not seem too rigid or heavy. I was able to move freely and at the same time feel safe by use of talus fields and scree slope. On either the hikes in the long-distances or even on shorter walks on the trails, this boot provides a comfort that your feet are safe without any interruption with movement or comfort.
Weight and Performance
A hiking experience can be ruined by weight, too much weight, and you feel sluggish and too little and you will experience the risk of poor support. Offrill Hike LT Mid stands in the middle between the two extremes. It weighs a bit heavier than other synthetic choices at about 1 lb 15.9oz but this extra weight is evident in the increase in stability and protection. I sensed the smoothness of my stride with the rocker-shaped sole, even on sharp downfalls.

The performance trade-off was justified to me because ultralight hikers may be discouraged by the additional weight. The balanced cushioning takes impact very well and thus lessens fatigue during extended walks. The Offtrail provides a firmer underfoot experience than the models such as the Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX, yet at the same level of comfort- this is suitable to any customer who can appreciate the endurance and dependability of their footwear on long walks.
Water Repellency and Breathability
Tramping in the unpredictable weather requires good waterproofing and the Gore-Tex in these boots did not fail. I walked through mud-pits, wet grass, and even shallow brooks without a drop of water leaking through. The gusseted tongue was a good way to keep the water out, providing a waterproof shield area on the part just below the ankle. There is however with all that protection some slight reduction of ventilation during hot days.

With that said, the trade-off is insignificant in regard to the waterproof efficiency. My socks remained dry even hours after being exposed to wet conditions and the inner lining did not fail to handle the accumulation of moisture. In colder or changeable climates, this water-resistance performance makes the Offtrail one of the best that are offered in the North Face hiking footwear collection.
Fit and Sizing
The hiking boots may be a nightmare to find the right hiking shoe size when you are in between two shoe sizes or the feet are wide. My typical shoe size is 8.5 or 9, depending on the brand, and in the case of the Offtrail, the 8.5 fit loosely fits. The toe box is very wide to give the toes enough space to move and swell during extended hikes something I really liked during the multi day hikes.

The boot however does run a little large so reducing by a half a size could be a better fit in narrow footed hikers. My pair was combined with some medium-thick hiking socks, which made the fit of my pair rather snug and comfortable. The consideration behind this design is that, finally, hikers with broad feet have an excellent-performing Gore-Tex shoe that does not cost comfort to structure.
